Shepherd and His Sheep

Random Thoughts #632

When God says that we are sheep, a flock in need of a shepherd, does he means we are dumb, confused and helpless? And yet he gives us dominion over the fish of the sea, the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
So we destroyed everything around us including each other.
Sheep is one of the first domesticated livestock species with a strong tendency to follow a leader. It comes as no surprise that both ancient and modern religious leaders use sheep to describe their subjects. The problem arises when during flocking one or more individuals develop problem-solving abilities.
They call that "heresy" and their answer is Inquisition. Mindless torture committed by the holy ones in the name of all loving God.
It's not very complementary: calling us "sheep", however, today most religious people see themselves as intelligent and independent sheep.
Think about that for a moment.

“The capacity to learn is a gift; The ability to learn is a skill; The willingness to learn is a choice.”
Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, House Harkonnen, 2000
“The only thing that gave me any conception of infinity was human stupidity.”
Francophile Robert Dell quotes Ernst Renan, My Second Country,1920
